Sunday’s Horse Racing Tips: Two horses stand out on 1,000 Guineas day after recent downpour

Conditions at Newmarket looked pretty testing on Saturday, so it should pay to plump with some mudlarks on Sunday’s card on the Rowley Mile. Fingers crossed for another winning double
The Qipco 1,000 Guineas (3.40) will take centre stage despite the fact that it doesn’t look to be the strongest edition. You generally need a filly to run to a minimum of 110 to be competitive and I’m just not sure that many of these can do that.
Richard Hannon’s Mammas Girl is probably the best place to start as she boasts the best piece of form this term. Her Nell Gwyn victory was exhilarating - she looked to be going nowhere before suddenly engaging top gear and running away from her opposition. However, the fact that she can get outpaced is a negative in Group 1 company and that trial hasn’t proved the best in recent times (just two winners of the Nell Gwyn have come back and plundered this race since 2000).
Remarquee boasts identical form figures to Mammas Girl and seems to be on a sharp upward trajectory. Perhaps she can provide Ralph Beckett with another Classic winner, but she’s yet to run to the required level and I’m not convinced this track will suit her. Her stablemate, Lezoo, was a sharp juvenile but surely has stamina concerns over a mile.
This could just come down to the Irish duo at the top of the market. Meditate won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and finished second in the Cheveley Park at this track last year, so there is plenty to like. However, she was completely demolished in the Moyglare by Dermot Weld’s Tahiyra and I see no reason why she will reverse that form.
Tahiyra enters the race with two wins from two races and could be the superstar this division needs. Soft ground is ideal - she relished it at the Curragh last season - and her turn of foot is the sharpest in this group. Providing she does herself justice on this undulating track, she is by far the filly to beat in this year’s 1,000 Guineas.
The Group 2 Dahlia Stakes (3.00) is an enticing betting heat with Andre Fabre’s Life In Motion currently sitting at the top of the market. This race-fit Godolphin filly scraped home by a head at Longchamp on her seasonal reappearance and might be overhyped due to her French connections.
She will handle the ground, which is probably why she’s strong in the betting right now, but her form doesn’t appear to be overly strong and I think she’s vulnerable on the step back up to Group company.
Ownermate With The Moonlight is a fast ground filly and I’d be surprised if Charlie Appleby kept her in the race, while Via Sistina has run her two worst races on testing conditions and is readily opposable.
I really like Prosperous Voyage, who will be partnered by Saturday’s 2,000 Guineas winning rider Frankie Dettori. This four-year-old has posted all of her best efforts on the straight tracks at Newmarket and caused a major shock when she fended off 1/7 poke Inspiral in last year’s Group 1 Falmouth Stakes.
She proved that she’s a top-class performer that day and, given she went close to winning the 1,000 Guineas on this card last year after a layoff, I’m sure she can do herself justice first time up. The ground is a slight question mark, but she has handled good to soft well on two occasions.
Prosperous Voyage (3.00 Newmarket) @ 4.7
Tahiyra (3.40 Newmarket) @ 3.2
