It’s the calm after the storm as the next stop on the PGA Tour falls in Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. Jackson CC takes centre stage, where Mackenzie Hughes will defend following a playoff win over Ryder Cup winner Sepp Straka last year. The field will be of B grade strength, and we should be able to squeeze out some value down the market.

Ludvig Aberg is obviously enjoying his golf right now and the big Swede makes the trip over from Italy and heads the betting at 13.5, T10 2.52. Emilliano Grillo had a resurgence to form last season and he has a notable record at the Country Club of Jackson where he finished in fifth place last year. Grillo is 4th in the betting at 29, T10 3.85. It’s a home game for Davis Riley who comes into the market at 46, T10 5.7. The winner of the Sanderson Farms will receive 500 FedEx Cup points.

The Course

It’s not a Donald Ross design but if you look at Jackson CC, with the layout of the track and all the general routing and aesthetics, it reminds you strongly of Sedgefield. It’s a John Fought design and Fought models his courses using Ross’ features. It’s an extremely similar track to the Greensboro gem and when you look at the guys who have contended and won there down the years it’s no coincidence that there’s an overlap on the Sanderson Farms leaderboards. The Country Club of Jackson is a par 72, playing 7,461 yards. It will be the 10th year the Sanderson Farms Championship is hosted at Jackson CC. Sam Burns holds the tournament record here, shooting 266 for 4 rounds in 2021. Premium is on Tee to green game, mainly with emphasis on approach which is paramount.

The Contenders

Lucas Herbert, 38, T10 4.6, climbed into the top 60 in the world after winning his third career DP World Tour title early this year and the big Aussie and former top amateur was back at it in the Fortinet Championship. Herbert was clear first round leader opening with a 63. He couldn’t keep it going, eventually finishing T30, but will be looking to challenge strongly at Jackson CC.

Peter Malnati, 130, T10 7, is a man who loves this place with a win and a second to his name here not to mention some FRLs, close calls and low rounds. Coming off the back of an 11th place finish last time out at the Fortinet Malnati looks a good outside bet to go well here.

Webb Simpson is an interesting one at around 150, T10 10.5, given his stellar record at Sedgefield and his recent top five finish again there a couple of months back to close out last season. He hasn't played this track in recent times, but I’ll have a flier on him to go well. When on-form Simpson is one of the best with the short irons and makes par breakers for fun.
