Weekend Premier League Tips: Spurs can raise eyebrows against United

Gameweek two of the 2023/24 Premier League season is almost upon us - here are tips from five matches taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth

Kick-off: 3pm Saturday

It has been a difficult week for Liverpool. Chelsea were the better team for much for their 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge last Sunday. The Blues then beat the Reds to the signings of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s side without a proven holding midfielder.

Liverpool are at least well stocked in attack with five top-class forwards competing for three positions. That should be enough to see them past Bournemouth, but do not be surprised if a clean sheet is out of reach.

Prediction: Liverpool to win and both teams to score at 2.52

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Kick-off: 3pm Saturday

Wolves’ preparations for their trip to Manchester United on Monday were less than ideal. Gary O’Neil only had a few days to prepare for the game, yet his team delivered a fantastic performance at Old Trafford. They were hugely unfortunate to lose 1-0.

Wolves played well but they were let down by their wastefulness in front of goal. That has been a problem for some time. Bear in mind, too, that Brighton scored three of their four goals against Luton Town in the second half last time out.

Prediction: Second half higher scoring at 1.98

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

Kick-off: 5.30pm Saturday, Sky Sports

Tottenham began the post-Harry Kane era with a 2-2 draw with Brentford on gameweek one. There were positives for Ange Postecoglou to take from his team’s performances, but Spurs remain outsiders in the top-four race this season.

Manchester United were poor against Wolves and a huge improvement will be needed this weekend. The Red Devils only collected one point against the top nine away from home last term, so a Spurs victory looks good value.

Prediction: Tottenham to win at 2.98

Manchester City vs Newcastle United

Kick-off: 8pm Saturday, Sky Sports

Manchester City added another trophy to the Etihad Stadium cabinet in midweek, as they beat Sevilla on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup. The exertions of that match - more than 120 minutes of football in Greece - could affect their display on Saturday.

Newcastle were superb in their 5-1 thrashing of Aston Villa last weekend and they have had a full week to prepare for this trip to Manchester. The double chance market is well worth exploring in this one.

Prediction: Draw or Newcastle at 2.14

West Ham United vs Chelsea

Kick-off: 4.30pm Sunday, Sky Sports

Chelsea kick-started Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure with a 1-1 draw with Liverpool. After a sluggish start, the Blues played well for most of the match, and their supporters will no doubt have appreciated the youthful, vibrant look to the team.

Reece James and Ben Chilwell will be key players at wing-back this season, and the latter took up particularly advanced positions against Liverpool. Chilwell was only denied a goal by VAR and it could be worth a punt on the left-footer finding the net in this London derby.

Prediction: Ben Chilwell to score any time at 10
