There are two pivotal Premier League matches scheduled for Sunday that will have a notable bearing on the final positions. Football expert Peter Galindo runs you through the action.
Kick-off: 2pm Sunday
Tuesday’s first leg of the Champions League semi-finals between Manchester City and Real Madrid was a fascinating tactical battle, and a 1-1 draw has set up a potentially scintillating return leg at the Etihad Stadium next week.
Before then, Man City have to face a resurgent Everton at Goodison Park. The Toffees are coming off a sensational 5-1 win over Brighton to escape the bottom three and will know the Leeds United and Nottingham Forest results before this one, which could buoy them even more.
Further good news for Everton comes in the fact that Pep Guardiola will likely rotate his side with Madrid coming to town on Wednesday. That means Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and other key contributors might miss out.
Even with expected rotation, Man City will be a force to be reckoned with. The league leaders have won their last 10 matches and their last six games at Everton’s ground in all competitions. Curiously, though, City have drawn at half-time and won at full-time in their last four here. That could provide some excellent value.
Prediction: Draw half-time, Manchester City win full-time @ 4.4
Kick-off: 2pm Sunday
Another club in an important European competition will square off at the same time as the prior match-up as West Ham United take on Brentford.
West Ham’s European commitments could lead to a more lethargic display, although Brentford have been involved in low-scoring matches recently. Four of their last five games have produced under 2.5 goals.
With the Hammers all but safe from relegation, there could be a bit of rotation on their part and that might lead to a cagier affair. I’d advise watching the Everton v Man City game!
Prediction: Under 2.5 goals @ 1.93
Kick-off: 4.30pm Sunday
Arsenal will kick-off in Sunday’s late game knowing Manchester City’s result at Everton. A slip-up on City’s behalf could open the door for the Gunners to jump over the leaders to close out the weekend.
Unfortunately for Arsenal, more defensive injuries will lead to further changes from Mikel Arteta. Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba are already ruled out, as is Oleksandr Zinchenko. Kieran Tierney should replace the Ukrainian without much issue at left back. Brighton’s only doubt is Solly March, who is reportedly touch-and-go for Sunday.
Brighton have guaranteed entertainment in recent weeks, with their games producing over 2.5 goals five times from the last six. Meanwhile, Arsenal have scored at least twice in 10 of their previous 11 encounters. That’s a recipe for a fun Sunday finale at the Emirates.
Prediction: Arsenal to win and Both teams to score @ 3.25
Everton v Manchester City: Draw halftime, Manchester City win full-time @ 4.4
Brentford v West Ham United: Under 2.5 goals @ 1.93
Arsenal v Brighton: Arsenal win and Both teams to score @ 3.25
