Sunday’s Premier League Tips: Kane set to strike in London derby

15 January 2023

A potentially ground-breaking weekend in the Premier League wraps up on Sunday as the North London Derby between Tottenham and Arsenal takes centre stage. Peter Galindo previews all three games.

Chelsea v Crystal Palace

Kickoff: 2pm Sunday

The pressure is mounting on manager Graham Potter as Chelsea have won just one of their last nine matches in all competitions while boasting a rapidly thinning squad due to injuries. Crystal Palace haven’t fared much better with a single success from their previous six matches, which includes five losses. Ironically, the last victory for each club came against Bournemouth.

Chelsea haven’t scored more than one goal in the Premier League since mid-October and rank 14th in expected goals per 90 minutes this season. Palace are three places below them in the xG table and have scored once or fewer in five of their last six games.

The reverse fixture on October 1 required a late strike from former Palace midfielder Conor Gallagher to secure a 2-1 victory for Chelsea after the Eagles opened the scoring early on. With both sides boasting futile attacks and in the midst of a poor run, this has draw written all over it.

Prediction: Draw @ 4

Newcastle v Fulham

Kickoff: 2pm Sunday

Two of the Premier League’s surprise teams square off in what could be an enthralling match. Newcastle will be looking to maintain the positive vibes after reaching the EFL Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City in midweek. Meanwhile, Fulham are also riding high after beating Chelsea on Thursday.

Unfortunately for the Cottagers, they’re dealing with a tight turnaround between matches. Even with Aleksandar Mitrovic set to return from suspension and a five-game winning run on the line, it might be too much to overcome.

Newcastle remain unbeaten in the Premier League since August 31, have conceded the fewest goals, sit third in expected goals against and have clean sheets in seven of their last eight matches. It’s very likely that the Magpies’ stellar defensive record will continue.

Prediction: Newcastle to keep a clean sheet @ 2.22

Tottenham v Arsenal

Kickoff: 4.30pm Sunday

The North London Derby is always entertaining, and the old cliche of form going out the window always applies for this fixture.

Tottenham have won consecutive matches for the first time in more than two months, while Arsenal still haven’t lost in the Premier League since the Manchester United defeat in early September. That being said, the gap to Manchester City is now down to five points.

Spurs striker Harry Kane has 14 goals in 18 matches and can move level with Jimmy Greaves as the club’s record scorer with a goal on Sunday. It appears written in the stars for that to happen in the derby given his previous exploits against the Gunners.

Prediction: Harry Kane anytime scorer @ 2.3
