Manchester United return to action on Sunday, while there's also a London derby to look forward to. Greg Lea previews all of Sunday’s matches and offers his Premier League predictions.
Kick-off: 2pm Sunday
Crystal Palace have endured a tough start to the season, having already faced Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in their first eight matches. A kinder run of fixtures begins with the visit of Leeds United on Sunday, as Patrick Vieira’s side aim to pull away from the bottom three.
Despite taking the lead, Palace did not create many notable chances in a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea last time out, and there remain concerns that the team does not pose enough of a scoring threat if Wilfried Zaha is kept quiet. Neither Jean-Philippe Mateta nor Odsonne Edouard, the two options at centre forward, are prolific, which means Palace rely heavily on Zaha in the final third.
Leeds drew a blank last weekend, drawing 0-0 with Aston Villa at Elland Road. Jesse Marsch’s men have now gone four games without a win, and three of those matches featured two goals or fewer. I anticipate another low-scoring encounter here.
Prediction: Under 2.5 goals @ 1.93
Kick-off: 2pm Sunday
West Ham picked up their second win of the Premier League season last weekend, before edging out Anderlecht 1-0 in the Europa Conference League. David Moyes’ charges will therefore head into Sunday’s London derby with renewed confidence as they strive to begin climbing up the table.
An early red card for Nathaniel Chalobah made for a nightmare start for Fulham in their meeting with Newcastle a week ago. A 4-1 home defeat was the Cottagers’ worst result of the campaign to date, and star man Aleksandar Mitrovic is a doubt for Sunday’s match after picking up an ankle injury.
If the Serbia international does indeed miss out, Fulham will carry much less of an attacking threat. West Ham, meanwhile, have kept two clean sheets in a row and are looking more defensively secure than they did at the start of the season. A home win to nil is the way to go in this one.
Prediction: West Ham to win to nil @ 2.96
Kick-off: 7pm Sunday
Manchester United bounced back from their humbling 6-3 loss to Manchester City last weekend by beating Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday. It wasn’t a particularly comfortable evening for Erik ten Hag’s team – United conceded the first goal and were then hanging on to their 3-2 lead in the latter stages – but it was vital that they returned to winning ways following that defeat at the Etihad.
United will now be eyeing their fifth win of the Premier League season, but they face a tricky test against an Everton team that has shown vast signs of improvement in recent weeks. Frank Lampard has made his side harder to beat, as evidenced by a six-match unbeaten run stretching back to August.
Yet Everton’s attack still does not inspire a great deal of confidence, and United’s superior firepower should make the difference in the late kick-off on Sunday.
Prediction: Manchester United to win @ 2.02
Crystal Palace v Leeds United: Under 2.5 goals @ 1.93
West Ham United v Fulham: West Ham to win to nil @ 2.96
Everton v Manchester United: Manchester United to win @ 2.02
