Focus Fixture: Scott Thornton's 7/2 Bet Builder for Spurs vs Man City

13 May 2024

On Tuesday night, Arsenal are pinning their title hopes on Tottenham. Ange Postecoglou’s side could be out of the race for the top four by kick-off but taking points off Manchester City would make their North London rivals the title favourites.

The Form

Tottenham were the Premier League leaders at one stage but they have slipped out of the top four in recent weeks. Much of the positivity surrounding the club has evaporated with recent displays but Ange Postecoglou will be reasonably happy given the challenges he faced when he took over as boss. The loss of Harry Kane was always going to be tough to deal with and Spurs have remained an attacking threat.

Spurs arrested the slump by beating Burnley 2-1 in their last game. Prior to that win, they had lost four consecutive matches. Nevertheless, their record against Manchester City is as good as anyone’s. They have won three of the last six meetings with the champions. However, they did lose the previous meeting in the FA Cup 1-0.

Pep Guardiola’s side have faced stern competition from Arsenal and Liverpool this season but they will fancy their chances of going on to lift a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Manchester City have won their last seven league games. This has seen them edge above Arsenal in the title race. They know that winning their two remaining games will be enough to secure the crown but the pressure is on ahead of Tuesday’s clash. Fortunately for Pep, his players have proven time and time again that they won’t wilt at the business end of the season.

The Runners and the Riders

Ange Postecoglou has had plenty of injury woes this season. Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon, Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner, Ben Davies and Richarlison will all miss the clash wit Manchester City.

Nathan Ake was forced off in Manchester City’s win over Fulham at the weekend so he is unlikely to feature here. Jack Grealish is also carrying a knock but it is unclear whether or not it will keep him out against Tottenham.

Selection

Tottenham have been somewhat of a bogey side for Manchester City of late but recent performances suggest we should see an away win. However, we are backing Tottenham to find the net in this one as they ultimately come up short.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have scored in all 18 of their home matches this season. Over the course of those matches, they are averaging 2.11 goals per game. They recently lost a home match against Arsenal, Manchester City’s title rivals, 3-1. This one should play out in a similar manner.

Manchester City have won nine of their last 10 away matches in the Premier League. They are scoring an average of 2.7 goals in those games. They have the firepower to overcome Tottenham even if they concede.

Recommended Bet: Manchester City to win and both teams to score at 13/10

Bet Builder Tip

The longer odds bet builder for this match also features a corners angle. Expect Manchester City to pile on the pressure and they hunt for a crucial victory. Pep Guardiola’s men should rack up the corners as a result.

The Citizens win an average of 7.53 corners per game in the league, only Liverpool have had more. They also concede the second-fewest corners in the league. Pep Guardiola’s side won the corner count 14-1 the only time they have visited this ground with Ange in charge of Tottenham.

Recommended Bet: Manchester City to win, both teams to score and Manchester City -3.5 corners handicap at 7/2
