Tottenham’s trip to Wolves is the standout fixture in the Premier League this Saturday - can Antonio Conte’s side continue their fine start? Robin Bairner tells all.
Big things are expected of Tottenham this season in the Premier League, and on Saturday they will have the chance to go temporarily top of the standings when they play Wolves in the early kick off.
Conte’s men made short work of Southampton on the opening day of the season as they recorded a 4-1 home victory, which was followed up with a feisty 2-2 draw at Chelsea. Their opponents, meanwhile, have made a disappointing start, losing to Leeds before being held at Fulham.
Given this backdrop, it is little surprise that Spurs are hot 1.42 favourites to win this game, with their guests 9.4 outsiders. A draw is priced at 5.2.
Since Antonio Conte took charge of Tottenham on November 2, 2021, Spurs have been a team reborn. The Italian has picked up points at a rate of exactly two per game in the 30 matches he has overseen, which would have been good enough for the London side to finish third if maintained over the whole of last season.
The summer has seen them strengthen again. Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Djed Spence, Ivan Perisic and Clement Lenglet have all joined up, while just this week Destiny Udogie arrived from Udinese in another multi-million pound deal.
Tottenham are building to secure a top-four place, and on the field they are already reaping the results. There was certainly an element of fortune in the manner of their draw with Chelsea last weekend, but there was no questioning the mental steel of the side as Harry Kane headed a 96th-minute equaliser.
Wolves have typically been strong performers in the Premier League but have made a slow start to this season, earning just a single point from two matches that they would have seen as winnable. They will have to step up their level to take anything on Saturday.
Indeed, they are nine league matches without a victory, dating back to last season, when they went seven without a win as their European challenge faded.
Curiously, though, they have enjoyed travelling to Tottenham in recent seasons. Wolves have come away with victory four times in their last seven trips to Spurs, including three wins since they last won promotion in 2018.
Despite Wolves’ impressive record at Tottenham, it is too hard to overlook the home side’s good recent form. Nevertheless, the odds of them winning are skinny at 1.42.
Instead, there are alternatives. Tottenham to win and both teams to score is available at 2.1, while combining a Spurs victory with over 2.5 goals is available at 2.14. Given that Conte’s men have struck six goals in their first two matches and have yet to keep a clean sheet, the marginally longer odds on this latter bet look superior value.
