Premier League Tipsheet: Can Arsenal and Liverpool go four points clear at the top?

22 April 2024

Manchester City’s break from Premier League action this weekend gave Liverpool and Arsenal the opportunity to move above the current title favourites. Both Liverpool and Arsenal will play again before we see City take on Brighton on Thursday night so the reigning champions could be four points behind before they play.

Arsenal vs Chelsea

Kick off: Tuesday 20:00, TNT Sports

It had been a tough week for Arsenal going into their match with Wolves on Saturday night. They rallied though and produced a convincing performance to win 2-0. As Arsenal were kicking off their match at Molineux, Chelsea were in the midst of a great FA Cup semi-final against Man City.

Unlike Arsenal, Chelsea weren’t successful this weekend and lost 1-0. They did play some good football and created more than enough chances but Nicholas Jackson appeared to have left his shooting boots at home. Chelsea have been so inconsistent in terms of results this season I am finding it difficult to back a result in this match.

Chelsea haven’t beaten Arsenal since August 2021 and have only won one of their last nine matches against the North London club. In six of those nine matches, over 2.5 goals has hit so that is the bet here.

Selection: Over 2.5 goals @ 1.55

Everton vs Liverpool

Kick off: Wednesday 20:00, Sky Sports

Both sides come into this game on the back of wins, Everton’s came controversially against relegation-rivals Nottingham Forest and Liverpool’s comfortably against mid-table Fulham.

The Merseyside Derby has not been kind to Everton fans in recent years, they have only beaten Liverpool twice in their last 30 meetings.

A win is critical for both teams as they battle it out at separate ends of the table. Liverpool were  back to winning ways against Fulham and I think they will continue their form at Goodison Park.

I am going to go with both teams not to score as well, this has hit in the last four fixtures between the two sides. While Liverpool have looked shaky at the back recently they have still only conceded 17 goals away from Anfield, which is the second best record in the league. Everton have struggled to find the back of the net all season only 18 times at home - the joint second worst record in the league. Despite scoring twice on Sunday against Forest they only created an XG of 0.47.

Selection: Liverpool to win and BTTS - No @ 2.88

Manchester United vs Sheffield United

Kick off: Wednesday 20:00

Manchester United scraped past Coventry City in their FA Cup semi-final despite being 3-0 up with 19 minutes to play. For Sheffield United, their 4-1 loss to fellow strugglers Burnley has all-but brought them a ticket back to the Championship.

The Blades have lost 12 out of 16 away games this season and I can’t see Old Trafford being the place where that record improves.

I do think the 120 minutes of football Manchester United played on Sunday will have taken a lot out of their players and the fact they are so short in defence means I can see Sheffield United finding the back of the net at Old Trafford. The Reds have only kept four clean sheets at home this season.

Selection: Man Utd to win and BTTS @ 2.18

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester City

Kick off: Thursday 20:00, Sky Sports

Brighton haven’t played since April 13, so they will have had 12 days to prepare for this match. In the meantime, Manchester City have played knockout matches against Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Brighton have seen their season hampered with injuries and have been unable to replicate the success of last season which saw them finish sixth. City on the other hand, looked untroubled by their Champions League exit as they beat Chelsea at Wembley to book their place in the FA Cup Final.

City have been in imperious form in the Premier League - as they often are at this stage of the season - so I struggle to see any other result than a City win in this match. Brighton meanwhile have only picked up five points from their last six games and sit 18th in the form table over that period.

BTTS seems like a good bet in this one, Brighton have only kept four clean sheets at home this season and this bet has hit in 80% of their home games this season.

Selection: Manchester City to win and BTTS @ 2.14
