Premier League predictions, tips & odds for Sunday October 16

We’re set for a bumper day of action in the Premier League on Sunday, with five games taking place. Greg Lea previews four matches, and gives his Premier League predictions.

Aston Villa v Chelsea

Kick-off: 2pm Sunday

Chelsea are ticking along nicely under Graham Potter. Their task at the San Siro on Tuesday was made easier by the first-half red card shown to Fikayo Tomori, but a 2-0 victory over AC Milan was an impressive result regardless. Chelsea have now won four matches on the bounce under their new manager, and kept a clean sheet in three of those games.

Aston Villa fans are somewhat less satisfied with Steven Gerrard, who is starting to come under pressure after his team’s mediocre start to the season.

Villa are not much further ahead than they were when Dean Smith was sacked almost a year ago, so it is understandable that questions are being asked of Gerrard. Chelsea can pile more pressure on the Villa boss by emerging victorious at Villa Park on Sunday.

Prediction: Chelsea to win @ 1.83

Leeds v Arsenal

Kick-off: 2pm Sunday

Arsenal made it six wins in a row in all competitions on Thursday, as they saw off Bodo/Glimt 1-0 in the Europa League. The run will end at some point but the Gunners are playing with a huge amount of confidence right now, and they will arrive at Elland Road believing they will depart with all three points.

Leeds made a brilliant start to their game against Crystal Palace last weekend. Pascal Struijk gave his side a 10th-minute lead as Jesse Marsch’s team pressed high up the pitch and overwhelmed their opponents. They were not able to keep up those energy levels as the match wore on, but Leeds will once again aim to come flying out of the traps here.

Arsenal have more quality than Palace to play around the press, but Leeds’ front-foot approach should produce an open first half regardless.

Prediction: Over 1.5 goals in the first half @ 2.44

Manchester United v Newcastle

Kick-off: 2pm Sunday

Manchester United left it late to see off Omonia Nicosia on Thursday, with Scott McTominay scoring the only goal of the game in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. It was not exactly a convincing way to beat the weakest team in their Europa League group, but United did at least get the job done – much as they did in a 2-1 defeat of Everton last weekend.

Newcastle can cause United some serious problems at Old Trafford

Newcastle are flying high, though, and the fact that they’ve had more than a week to prepare for this match means they should be competitive. Eddie Howe’s side hit five past Brentford last time out and could have Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin available from the start at Old Trafford.

This promises to be an entertaining encounter, and I anticipate at least three goals being split between the two teams.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score @ 1.93

Southampton v West Ham

Kick-off: 2pm Sunday

Ralph Hasenhuttl is the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job. Southampton ended last season poorly and, despite a handful of positive results at the start of this term, they are once again in a slump. Four defeats in a row, and five in their last six outings, have left the Saints just one point above the bottom three going into the weekend.

This is a massive game for the under-fire Saints boss, but West Ham are tricky opponents. True, they did play in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night, although the 2-1 victory over Anderlecht at least came in London rather than Belgium. The Hammers are in good form and they can push Hasenhuttl closer to the exit door in this one.

Prediction: West Ham to win at 2.46
