Premier League Betting Tips: Can Man Utd make it two wins from two?

23 August 2024

After an opening weekend which saw most of the favourites win, the second weekend of the Premier League season is here.

Brighton vs Manchester United

Manchester United’s defensive unit followed up the press from the attackers in their clash with Fulham last weekend. Erik Ten Hag’s side had been criticised for leaving a gaping hole in midfield for the opposition to exploit but an attempt has been made to close that gap. United’s centre-backs are now asked to step up and engage the opposition attackers as they receive the ball. This opens an opportunity in the tackle market.

We are backing Lisandro Martinez to make at least two tackles here. He made three of Manchester United's 21 tackles in the 1-0 win over Fulham. He made one tackle in this fixture last season but played just 59 minutes having not long returned from injury. Lisandro should play the 90 minutes this time around and the Red Devils’ more aggressive approach will favour tackles.

Recommended Bet: Over 1.5 tackles for Lisandro Martinez at 1.98

Tottenham vs Everton

Tottenham were the most fouled team in the Premier League last season and they forced the third most cards with their opponents averaging 2.74 per game.  Ange Postecoglou likes his side to play on the front foot and they should put Everton under pressure here.

The Toffees had three more cards than Spurs in both meetings between the sides in the last campaign. Sean Dyche’s side also made an ill-disciplined start to this season. Ashley Young was sent off for a professional foul in the 66th minute. James Tarkowski was also booked, ensuring they ended the game with more cards than Brighton. We are backing Everton to have more cards than their opponents once again.

Recommended Bet: Everton to have the most cards at 1.64

Aston Villa vs Arsenal

Arsenal were defensively sound last season. They conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League with an average of 0.76 per game, 0.13 fewer than Manchester City. Mikel Arteta’s side also had the lowest xGA in the league with 31.78 so the defensive solidity was no fluke. This resulted in them conceding just 8.5 shots per game. The Gunners conceded nine shots in their win over Wolves on the opening day.

Under 10.5 shots for Aston Villa is our bet for this one. They had 10 in this fixture last season. The Villans are averaging just eight shots per game in their last five head-to-heads with Arsenal.

Recommended Bet: Under 10.5 shots for Aston Villa at 1.84

Bournemouth vs Newcastle

Bournemouth lost Dominic Solanke to Tottenham this summer, the man who was responsible for over a third of their goals in the Premier League last season. The loss of their clinical forward could prove difficult to contend with but Andoni Iraola proved he is an astute tactician capable of rising to the challenge last season. The Cherries may still be in the market for a striker but perhaps the solution is already in the squad.

Antoine Semenyo is the man who has been tasked with filling the void left by Solanke. Semenyo started out wide last season but still looked dangerous. In the Premier League last season, he managed to average three shots per 90 minutes played. This translated to an average of 1.3 shots on target. Semenyo scored Bournemouth’s late equaliser against Nottingham Forest last weekend. He had five shots in the match, two of which were on target.  Antoine had four shots from the right wing against Newcastle, one found the target but two is a good price with him set to lead the line.

Recommended Bet: Over 1.5 shots on target for Antoine Semenyo at 2.88

Liverpool vs Brentford

Arne Slot takes charge of his first Liverpool game at Anfield this weekend when they host Brentford. The Reds made a slow start against Ipswich last weekend but looked super after the break. The new manager hasn’t been given any new players to bolster his squad but the Reds’ attack remains amongst the most lethal in the Premier League so we are backing Liverpool -2 on the Asian handicap market here.

Liverpool had the highest xG in the league last season with 94.79. In the second half against Ipswich, they were credited with creating six big chances and should have won by a wider margin. They scored an average of 2.58 goals per game at Anfield last season and are capable of putting Brentford to the sword here. The Reds beat Brentford by three goals twice last season.

Recommended Bet: Liverpool -2 Asian handicap at 2.04
