Liverpool v Newcastle Tips: Expect goals from two in-form sides on Wednesday

30 August 2022

Although the most recent game between Liverpool and Newcastle ended in a cagey 1-0 victory to the Reds, this fixture has a rich history of producing Premier League classics.

The Magpies are back mixing it with the big guns after a productive transfer window and they are unbeaten in five games to start their 2022/23 campaign. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool bounced back from a disappointing defeat to Manchester United with a record-equalling 9-0 mauling of Bournemouth at the weekend.

There is an expectation that Wednesday’s fixture will be an absolute cracker, although the market strongly suggests Liverpool are the team to beat (1.35). They are unbeaten in their last 11 games against Newcastle, after all.

Lively Liverpool back to their best

It took longer than expected, but Liverpool’s first win of the season arrived on Saturday in stunning style. The Reds were 5-0 up at the break thanks to some pinpoint finishes, which allowed them to canter in the second half in front of a jubilant crowd. A string of early changes didn’t stop the flow of the game and kept key players fresh in a busy period.

As much as that drubbing will have provided much-needed confidence, a league victory for Liverpool was well overdue. They have already presented Arsenal and Manchester City with a comfortable early advantage in the title race and an extended run of victories for Jurgen Klopp’s side is extremely important.

There is no doubt that Liverpool are capable of doing just that. They posted a 10-game winning streak last term, and it looks like it may already take something similarly spectacular to ensure they are among the leading pack before November’s World Cup.

Magpies flying high

Newcastle have picked up three points from their last three games. Such a statement doesn’t suggest success, but it’s worth noting that they remain unbeaten in that period. Trips to Brighton and Wolves wouldn’t be classed as the easiest fixtures, while a 3-3 draw at home to Manchester City showed they have the class to test the league’s elite.

The Magpies have been craving a high-level centre forward and believe they have found him in the form of Alexander Isak. The Sweden international, who moved from Real Sociedad for a club record £63 million fee, should make his much-anticipated debut at Anfield.

Newcastle continue to show marked progression and must be respected. They have scored in five of their last seven games against Liverpool, though that has not resulted in many positive results.

A classic in the making

Liverpool and Newcastle games are renowned for their entertainment. Who can forget Kevin Keegan slumped over the advertising boards after Stan Collymore slammed in a 92nd-minute goal to give Liverpool a 4-3 victory in 1996?

More of the same is possible in this encounter. Five of the last eight games between these sides have produced over 3.5 goals and, with both teams showing good scoring touch so far this season, the 2.28 on offer in this market looks too good to ignore.

Form is temporary, class is permanent - that’s the old saying! However, form means plenty in football and Liverpool’s early-season struggles cannot be easily forgotten. As a result, I want to be playing on the Asian Handicap, which provides good value.

Newcastle are 1.56 on the Asian Handicap (+2 goals) market, meaning they would have to be defeated by three goals for this bet to lose. I don’t see that happening.
