Focus Fixture: Can Liverpool get back to winning ways against Spurs?

3 May 2024

Liverpool are looking to get back to winning ways when they welcome Tottenham to Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s chances of securing a league title in his final season as manager have all but evaporated in recent weeks but they will still be looking to finish the season on a high.

The Form

Klopp had been hoping to complete a quadruple this season but a dip in form had proven costly. The FA Cup exit at Old Trafford signalled the beginning of the end but they will still be happy with what they have achieved in this campaign. The club are set to return to the Champions League after a year's absence.

Liverpool could only manage a 2-2 draw with West Ham last weekend. They have now won just two of their last seven matches across all competitions. The poor run saw them bow out of the Europa League and fall five points behind Arsenal in the title race.

Tottenham came into the season without the burden of expectation. Ange Postecoglou was tasked with bringing a footballing identity to the club and he achieved that. The loss of Harry Kane in the summer could have had a hugely negative impact on Spurs but the rest of the attack has rallied to fill the void left by the prolific striker.

Ange’s side were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea midweek. They improved in the second half of the match but were unable to salvage anything from the game. They are now on a run of three straight defeats and have conceded nine goals in the process. Their recent record at Anfield will do nothing to buoy their confidence ahead of Sunday’s match.

The Runners and the Riders

Liverpool’s injury situation had improved in recent weeks but they still have a few absentees. Diogo Jota is back on the sidelines after sustaining an injury. Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip are also ruled out. Virgil Van Dijk faces a late fitness test. It would be a big blow for the Reds if he is unable to start.

Tottenham have also had more than their fair share of injuries this season but players have slowly been returning to the squad. However, Timo Werner, Ryan Sessegnon, Destiny Udogie, Manor Solomon and Ben Davies won’t feature at Anfield on Sunday.

What They Said

Klopp’s touchline squabble with Salah grabbed headlines last weekend but the departing boss has claimed the issue has been resolved. Jurgen said: “There’s no problem. We are absolutely fine with it. It's a non-story."

Sam Dean reflected on Tottenham’s poor form after the defeat at Stamford Bridge in a piece for the Daily Telegraph. He said “No Champions League football and, in the last few weeks, not much growth either. The glory days of autumn must feel a long time ago for Postecoglou.”

Selection
Liverpool’s home matches across all competitions this season have seen an average of 3.81 goals per game. They remain one of the best attacking sides in the league but they have also been leaking goals of late so over 3.5 goals looks a good bet here.

The Reds have the highest xG in the Premier League with an average of 2.27 per game. They have been wasteful at times but their average of 2.2 goals per game is only bested by Arsenal and Manchester City. Liverpool’s eight league matches in front of their own fans in 2024 have seen an average of 3.75 goals.

Tottenham’s Premier League matches have seen an average of 3.56 goals. Ange will be keen to see a response from his team here so expect them to show plenty of attacking intent. Klopp’s side won 4-3 the last time that Spurs rocked up at Anfield.

Recommend Bet: Over 3.5 goals at 1.70

Bet Builder Tip

We are backing goals in our bet builder as well as Liverpool to win the match. Both teams have scored in the last seven head-to-heads between these sides and those have seen an average of 3.71 goals. Tottenham can get at a Liverpool side that have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine home matches in the Premier League but I expect them to come up short.

Liverpool have lost their last two games at Anfield but those are their only two home defeats in 27 matches in this campaign. They haven’t lost at home to Tottenham since 2011.

The last of our betting angles is over 13.5 corners in the match. There were 16 corners when these sides squared off earlier in the season and this increased our bet builder odds to 5.10. Tottenham matches have seen the second most corners in the Premier League this season. Liverpool’s matches have seen the fourth most.

Recommended Bet: Over 3.5 goals, BTTS, Liverpool to win & over 13.5 corners at 5.10
