Thursday night European football returns this week with teams dropping down from the competitions above taking on the team that finished second in their groups in either the Europa League or the Europa Conference League. There are no English teams featuring in this round of fixtures because they all finished top of their groups.

Shakhtar Donetsk have played only friendlies over the last month as they prepare for the return of European football so it could take some time for them to get into their full stride. They kept clean sheets on their way to 1-0 wins in their last two home matches in Europe. However, those encounters took place in Poland due to the conflict in Ukraine. They haven’t played in Donetsk since 2014.
Marseille’s last five matches have seen an average of 2.2 goals per game and our bet has won in four of those. Their only win in their last seven matches came against lower-tier opposition in the Coupe de France so it’s unlikely they will make a fast and confident start here.
Tip: Under 2.5 goals in the match at 1.90

Since the start of the 2021/22 campaign, Feyenoord have played 17 European matches at De Kuip. They have suffered just one defeat over that period and have scored in every single match. Over the course of those 17 matches in front of their own fans, Feyenoord are averaging 2.94 goals per game and conceding 1.06.
Danielle De Rossi has taken charge at Roma since Jose Mourinho’s departure and his early matches at the helm have seen plenty of goals. They have played four competitive fixtures under their former player and there has been an average of four goals per game. They succumbed to a 4-2 defeat against Inter at the weekend and should show plenty of attacking intent once again.
Tip: Both teams to score at 1.78

The Rossoneri reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season and are definitely capable of going all the way after dropping into the Europa League. Both teams have scored in four of Milan’s last five matches. There has been an average of 3.8 goals per game over that period. The 1-0 win over Napoli at the weekend was the exception. Both teams have also found the net in Milan’s last three European matches.
Rennes come into this one in fine-scoring form. They have won six of their last seven matches in all competitions; averaging 2.43 goals per game in the process. Julien Stephan’s side scored five goals across their three group matches on the road.
Tip: Both teams to score at 1.89

Lens have won six of their last eight home matches in all competitions but clean sheets have been hard to come by of late. They have conceded in four of their last five matches at the Estadio Bollaert-Delelis. Both teams scored in all three of Lens’ home matches in the group stages of the Champions League.
Freiburg’s European matches so far this season have seen plenty of goals. There were an average of four in their group stage games and I’m expecting a glut of goals once again. The German side’s matches since the winter break have seen an average of 3.2 goals; one for Freiburg and 2.2 for the opposition.
Tip: Both teams to score @ 1.90
