The fun continues in the English Football League as teams up and down the country keep punching above their weight or underperforming on pre-season expectations, and in the divisions below the top-flight there’s plenty of excitement to be had.
Four different teams are still unbeaten, five are yet to pick up a win, and there’s a high chance that by the end of this weekend we could have a player or two already into double figures for the season.
We’ve selected a game from each division that’s worth a closer look, and taken a look at what could play out in each of them.
Championship
Kick off: 3pm Saturday
Steven Schumacher’s Pilgrims have suffered a bit of a bump back down to earth in recent weeks after last season’s unbelievable efforts in League One, and they head into this one as outsiders (3.7) to win on their home patch.
Plymouth’s home record remains impressive having been beaten there just three times in the last year in league fixtures, however four defeats in their last five Championship games suggests a struggle with the higher division. They have, though, scored in all but one of their seven games since coming up.
Norwich, meanwhile, have blown hot and cold recently, a shock defeat to Rotherham United being sandwiched in between wins over Huddersfield Town and Stoke City prior to their midweek loss to Leicester. They’ve kept three clean sheets on the road this season.
Prediction: Both teams to score and over 2.5 @ 1.91
League One
Kick off: 3pm Saturday
Just a point separates these go as they face off for the first time this season, and they have a very similar record as they head into battle at the Kassam Stadium.
Both were knocked out of the Papa John’s Trophy this week, but won their most recent League One game to keep up fine starts that have seen them make up half of the division’s top four. They’ve also got a spread of goalscorers with seven each so far.
The U’s won the last meeting back in January, and are 1.85 favourites to do so again this time around, but the Grecians have scored in all of their last five league matches.
Prediction: Over 2.5 goals @ 1.89
League Two
Kick off: 3pm Saturday
One team came up into League Two last season, the other came down, but looking at the league positions of Notts County and Forest Green you’d be forgiven for thinking it happened the other way around to reality.
Notts are flying, second in the division and among the top scorers, while Rovers sit 21st with one of the worst defensive records in the league. The hosts also happen to have the likes of Matty Langstaff and David McGoldrick on their books that are capable of causing all sorts of problems. They’re part of the reason you can get them at 2.28 to win both halves.
If you take last season into consideration the visitors have won just two of their last 16 league games, and with nine conceded in their last three in all competitions it’s no surprise that they’re at 6.2 to come out on top.
Prediction: Notts County to win and over 2.5 goals @ 2.02
Back BTTS and over 2.5 goals in Plymouth Argyle v Norwich City @ 1.91
Back over 2.5 goals in Oxford United v Exeter City @ 1.89
Back Notts County to win and over 2.5 goals @ 2.02
