The 2023/24 edition of the Champions League is well and truly underway as we head into the halfway mark of this season’s group stages, and we’re already seeing the importance of fixtures ramp up after some shock results in the opening two games.
Two English teams are in action as Manchester United and Arsenal both look to bounce back after defeat last time out, while a certain Englishman is looking to carry on his superb start to life at Real Madrid.
We’ve picked one game from each of the groups in action on Tuesday night to take a closer look at:
Group A
Kick off: 8pm Tuesday
At Old Trafford, and as 1.38 favourites, this game provides the Red Devils with the chance to win their first CL match in almost two years. They’ve lost their last three, however it was the last that will have stung the most after falling to Galatasaray earlier this month.
The Danes have started well domestically and are already top of the Superliga table, however there’s a big jump up in quality from Vejle Boldklub to the three-time European Champions - but United’s leaky defence have kept only three clean sheets across all competitions in 2023/24 and are at 1.79 to concede
Marcus Rashford (2.1 anytime goalscorer) is seen as the most likely to get on the scoresheet, but if you think both teams could be amongst the goals then that’s at 2 as things stand.
Prediction: Manchester United to win and over 2.5 goals @ 1.98
Group B
Kick off: 8pm Tuesday
Sevilla are Europa League specialists, so much so that they’ve won it seven times in the last 20 years, but the same can’t be said for their efforts in the elite level competition. Since December 2020, they’ve played 18 CL games – and won just three of them. It’s why they’re outsiders for victory here at 4.5.
Meanwhile, the Gunners may be in great form in the Premier League and unbeaten after nine games, but they suffered a shock defeat in their last European game as RC Lens saw them off with a 2-1 victory in France. Mikel Arteta will be desperate to avoid the same fate in Spain, and you can get an away win at 1.86.
On home soil Sevilla have proved to be difficult to beat even if they have only won two of seven, and the fact that they’ve got a goal in them means that all but one of those games has not seen both sides on the scoresheet. Fancy both teams to score at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán? That’s at 1.79.
Prediction: Arsenal to win and under 4.5 goals @ 2.28
Group C
Kick off: 8pm Tuesday
Prior to this season it had been over a decade since Braga kicked a ball in the CL, and this season they’ve had to do it the hard way having started their campaign in August’s third round qualifiers. The win over Union Berlin earlier this month was their first group stage victory in almost exactly 11 years.
You’d expect things to be different against the mighty Madrid, though. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have won 10 of 12 this season, and have scored 2+ goals on eight occasions. Jude Bellingham’s dream start to life in the Spanish capital has certainly helped, and he’s at 2.3 to get his 11th Los Blancos goal in his 12th game.
The hosts have scored in all 13 of their last home matches though, including against Napoli last month.
Prediction: Real Madrid to score in both halves @ 1.98
Group D:
Kick off: 8pm Tuesday
Only one team has managed to beat Inter so far this season, and they head into this tie on a four-game unbeaten run and flying high at the top of the Serie A table. The Austrians, meanwhile, have been blowing hot and cold with two wins in their last six.
Lautaro Martinez (1.9 anytime goalscorer) already has 12 goals to his name across all competitions this season, and his side will host Salzburg high on confidence after a 3-0 win over Torino that saw the Argentine find the back of the net once again.
Gerhard Struber’s side only have two wins in their last 10 CL games, however haven’t lost an away game in any competition since February – scoring 2+ goals in 13 of the 16 matches on the road that they’ve played since then. They’ve proven that they’ve got a goal in them.
Prediction: Both teams to score @ 2.16
Back Manchester United to win & over 2.5 goals @ 1.98
Back Arsenal to win & under 4.5 goals @ 2.28
Back Real Madrid to score in both halves @ 1.98
Back BTTS in Inter Milan v RB Salzburg @ 2.16
