9 November 2023

One of the most controversial matches ever seen in darts happened on the 18th November 2018 when the rising star Gerwyn Price took the Grand Slam of Darts title against one of the real greats of the game Gary Anderson by 16 legs to 13.

It will probably be remembered for the wrong reasons, but for me it was the emergence of a player that demonstrated the skills of a top dart player and the attributes of a potential champion of the world including presence, mindset and bottle.

Price loves the format of the Grand Slam, that is why he gets my vote to win the 2023 event on November 19 at the WV Active Aldersley in Wolverhampton. However it won’t be easy with a potential match rematch with Anderson in the last 16.

Twelve months ago, we witnessed the real romance of Michael Smith winning his first PDC major, which was the catalyst of bigger things to come and two months later he was crowned the PDC World Champion at the Alexandra Palace.

The Grand Slam can offer that spark to players with the Players Championships finals at Minehead the only competition separating the Grand Slam and World Championships as players strive to peak for the most important part of the darting calendar year.

One of the in-form players going into the Grand Slam is Anderson.

He has been sensational on the floor winning four Players Championships with the question now of will he transfer this sensational form to the stage. I really fancied him to go all the way at the recent World Grand Prix, but Andrew Gilding the UK Open Champion stopped him in his tracks.

Luke Humphries and Dave Chisnall looked fantastic on the PDC European Tour this year and both players must be given serious consideration for this title. Especially Humphries who won his first major with a sensational win at the recent World Grand Prix in Leicester.

Despite all the success at the European Tour for Humphries and Chisnall it was Peter Wright that took the European Championships win after a very tough season for Snakebite, a timely remember to himself and others, that there is plenty still in the tank for the two times champion of the world

There is a theory in the darting world that if Michael van Gerwen is motivated to win a title, he will. He added the 2023 Premier League title to his incredible collection of major wins and the Grand Slam is a title he has won on three occasions, the last back in 2017. I think he will be delighted not only with the group draw, but also the fact that Price, Humphries and Smith are in the top half of the draw

For value for money, I really like the look of Danny Noppert who qualified this week via PDC Tour Card Holder qualifiers. The former UK Open Champion has been paired with current UK Open Champion, Gilding, Brendan Dolan and Haruki Muramatsu. I expect Noppert to qualify from this group and progress from his previous best of Last 16 of this competition.

All eyes will be on Beau Greaves, the sensational current Women’s World Champion and 2023 Matchplay Champion, plus Fallon Sherrock who could cap a sensational few weeks after receiving the MBE recently by beating Michael Van Gerwan in her opening match of the group stage.

After taking everything into consideration its Price and Noppert as a longshot.
